MARCH, 2008 The first series of lectures commenced on 4 March and were presented by Professor Marc Bekoff. The first of the series was held in collaboration with the International Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS), the Animals and Society (Australia) Study Group, and supported by university schools and interest groups, environmental organisations and animal advocacies. The lectures took place in Adelaide, Sydney and in Newcastle between 4 and 6 March, 2008, and were very well attended. They focused on animal behaviour, wildlife protection and environmentalism, and were entitled Animal Emotions and Beastly Passions: why "good welfare" isn't "good enough". The second series of lectures were delivered in the first week of August in Newcastle and Sydney by Professor David Rothenberg. David is known as a writer, philosopher, ecologist, and musician, speaking out for nature in all aspects of his diverse work. He is both a respected authority on deep ecology, and a jazz clarinetist known for his integration of world music with improvisation and electronics, and most recently for his work on birdsong and whalesong. Professor Rothenberg's lecture was entitled "Why Whales and Birds Sing".
NOVEMBER, 2008 - NEW YORK The third series of pre-conference lectures was held in New York, USA, on 14 November, 2008, between 12 Noon and 6pm. They were excellently attended, with over 80 delegates. Speakers included Professors Peter Singer, Dale Jamieson, Lori Gruen, Cynthia Chris, David Rothenberg, Ralph Acampora, Kari Weil and Una Chaudhuri. Also in attendance was the Minding Animals Conference Co-convenor, Dr Rod Bennison, who spoke about the conference, and Ms Penny Finnigan from the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, who spoke about what is planned for the Minding Animals Arts Festival for Newcastle next July. The lectures were hosted by the Hunter College of the City University of New York, and were sponsored by the Philosophy Department, Geography Department, and the Provost's Office of CUNY. Professors Ralph Acampora and Christa Acampora provided the much needed and appreciated logistical support was was so vital in making the lectures happen.
DECEMBER, 2008 - LONDON
The fourth series of pre-conference lectures was held in London, UK, on 5 December, 2008. The lectures were very well attended with over 65 delegates. Speakers included Professor Richard D. Ryder, Professor Donald Broom, Dr Hilda Kean, Dr Erica Fudge, Kim Stallwood, Dr Lucile Desblache, Dr Andrea Gavinelli and Professor Robert Garner. The lectures were hosted by the Menzies Centre of Australian Studies of King's College at Waterloo. Dr Ian Henderson provided the much needed and appreciated logistical support was was so vital in making the lectures happen.
DECEMBER, 2008 - GENEVA The fifth series of pre-conference lectures was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 18 December, 2008. Like New York and London, Geneva was well attended with over 40 delegates. The theme for this lecture series was the Human Animal Frontier. Speakers included Professors Annik Dubied and Claudine Burton-Jeangros, as well as Dr Jennifer McDonell, Dr Nick Bingham, Dr Anne Simon, Dr André Micoud, Professor Juliet Fall, David Gerber, Karine Darbellay, Emmanuel Gouabault and Valérie Gorin. The event was hosted by the Département de Sociologie and the Département de Géographie, Université de Genève, and was conducted in both French and English. David Gerber, Karine Darbellay and Dr Emmanuel Gouabault provided the much needed and appreciated logistical support which was so vital in making the lectures happen.
MAY, 2009 The final Minding Animals Pre-conference Lecture was held in Newcastle, Australia, on 6 May, 2009, in University House, Newcastle. Speakers were Professor Steve Garlick, pre-eminent Australian wildlife advocate and carer, and Bruce Wagman, a leading animal protection litigator from the USA. The lecture was held in conjunction with the Voiceless Animal Law Protection Series (click here for details of that lecture series), and hosted by the University of Newcastle Law School.
